In 1995 Vaad L’Hatzolo opened
the first Jewish Day School in Baku. The school offers a regular
public school curriculum coupled with daily classes in Hebrew and
Jewish studies. Its high academic and ethical standards have earned
the respect and cooperation of the local school and government officials,
as well as the admiration of the parent body. Many boys age 11-17
attend programs for more advanced Talmudic studies after regular
school hours.
Our yeshiva dormitory building is
currently going renovations to enable the boys to immerse themselves
in a true Torah atmosphere. Each day, the boys daven in the local
shule, providing important chizuk and ruach to the local Jewish
community. Rabbi Moshe Hodael is the newly appointed director of
the Vaad’s activities in Baku. His experience in the early
stages of the Vaad’s activities in Baku and later in Israel
makes him uniquely qualified for this position and he is now bringing
renewed energy and even higher standards of learning to the Yeshiva.
Bais Yakov of Azerbaijan is open
in the afternoon to provide additional Jewish studies for the girls.
Our other activities in Baku include operating a kosher bakery and
a soup kitchen that serves 300 meals a day to the elderly and infirm.
Each year many tons of Matzo, grape juice, and other basic necessities
are shipped before Pesach. The Vaad is the sole source of kosher
food in Azerbaijan.
A beautiful Mikva was built by the Vaad and is B”H being used
by more and more families every month due to the efforts of Mrs.
Hodael.
